Every time this song pops up on my ipod I’m immediately transported back to grade 10. I was an angry kid back in the day, for many reasons, and these guys got me through a lot. Being able to channel your feelings into raging in your room rather than going out and doing stupid shit saved me from making many bad decisions early on in my life (I was also lucky I had parents that didn’t put up with bullshit). Anyone who tries to tell you that they weren’t dumb as bricks in high school is a liar. All teenagers are idiots, regardless of how smart you thought you were. Its the first years of growing as a person. You’re trying out new identities while figuring out who you are and where you fit in the world. You don’t know shit and yet you think you know everything because school is telling you how smart you are, and teaching you all these terrible truths about the world at the same time. High school is a really fucked up time for lots of people, but I pity those who peaked during that time more than those who struggled.
(fun fact: The Misfits named their band after Marilyn Monroe’s last film of the same name)
"Over the past 30 or so years, most people have chosen to pursue the rewards of conformity instead of the fruits of revolt. What they have been left with are ugly and stupid lives, ugly and stupid places and a planet pushed to the very edge of destruction by capitalism’s efforts to keep feeding them new promises of consumable happiness…"
Interesting little analysis on youth culture and rebellion by Wayne Spencer. Pessimistic vibe, but I like his view point.
